European Union Reference Laboratories Plant Health

The National Reference Centre – Plant Health (NRC) of the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority is the coordinator of 2 European Reference Laboratories (EURLs) for pests on plants on Bacteria, and Viruses, viroids and phytoplasmas.

European Reference Laboratories for plant health play an important role in the identification of the presence of plant pests by improving the uniformity and reliability of diagnostics in the European Union.

Legislation

The structure of European Reference Laboratories, National Reference Laboratories and Official Laboratories is regulated in the Official Control Regulation (2017/625/EC). In other domains, such as food and feed, and animal health, this structure is already in place. For plant health this structure is new and the EURLS are recently appointed. EURLs are appointed for the following organism groups:

  • Bacteria
  • Insects and mites
  • Fungi and oomycetes
  • Nematodes
  • Viruses, viroids and phytoplasmas

The NRC of the NVWA coordinates the EURLs for Bacteriology and Virology

The EURLS plant health are formed as consortia, in which the NRC works together with laboratories from Belgium, Italy and Slovenia. Through collaborating in consortia the EURLs have a broad knowledge of organisms, crops and methods. National Reference Laboratories (NRLs) will find more information on the EURL website for the EURLs for Bacteriology and Virology.
